The story of the Atmos

It all began in 1928, when Swiss engineer Jean-Léon Reutter unveiled his prototype, today known as the Atmos 0 or Reutter clock. This early version ran on a mercury-in-glass expansion system, powered purely by tiny changes in temperature.

In 1929, commercial production of the Atmos 1 started in France. In 1935, Jaeger-LeCoultre took over manufacturing, and just a year later introduced the Atmos II with the now-famous ethyl chloride bellows.

Since then, more than half a million Atmos clocks have been produced, evolving from a mercury-driven prototype to a modern icon. A story of ingenuity, elegance and timeless perseverance.
